Situations that come up
The cake ordered that doesn’t match the request
Acknowledge the gap without going into the details of the order. Offer a direct exchange to understand what was missing in the communication.
The wait in the shop at weekends
On Sunday mornings the queue goes out of the door. Apologise simply and mention, if it is true, how to reserve to avoid the wait.
The price judged high
Don’t compare with supermarkets. Say thank you for the remark and mention only, if you wish, that your work is homemade.
The greedy review
Say thank you and mention the cake or the pastry. Avoid announcing offers in the reply.
Three reply templates to adapt
Fill in the fields (optional)
An empty field stays in square brackets in the text: fill it in before publishing. Read it over and change a few words, a reply that looks written for this person beats a copy-paste.
Order different from expected
The cake did not match the request.
Hello [first name], thank you for your feedback. We are sorry your cake was not the one you expected for this occasion, [problem]. Could you write to us at [contact] so we can understand what happened? The [business name] team.
Wait in the shop
The customer waited a long time.
Hello [first name], thank you for taking the time to write to us. We understand that the wait, [problem], was unpleasant. We are thinking about how to handle the crowds better. You can also write to us at [contact]. [business name].
Thank-you
Positive review.
Thank you [first name] for your message! Your words about [specific point] make the whole [business name] team happy. See you very soon in the shop.
Other cases (fake, unfair, no comment reviews): the twelve general templates.
Where to put your review QR code
- At the counter, on a small stand near the till, with a short sentence.
- On the box or the bag handed over with the cakes.
- On the card attached to holiday orders, with the link to your listing.
The direct link, the QR code and an A4 poster with your name are made here: Google review link and QR code (free, no account). The same QR code for all your customers, with no sorting.
To check on your Google listing
- Your hours, with closing days and the hours on the eve of public holidays.
- Custom orders: lead time requested, how to order and the number to call.
- Photos of the window display and real creations, taken in daylight.
To go through the rest: the 17-point listing check-up. A complete listing doesn't guarantee a better ranking, it mostly keeps you from losing a customer over wrong info.
To avoid
- Defending yourself by quoting the details of the order in a public reply.
- Promising a cake as a gift to make amends: Google looks at that kind of exchange.
- Asking only the most loyal customers: Google forbids sorting.
Google's rules change: read its official help from time to time. More details: getting more Google reviews, honestly. These tips are practical, they don't replace legal advice.
